Every individual is undeniably shaped by their environment and the people around them. Our thoughts dictate the world we perceive, but if we mentally detach ourselves from external influences, we can embark on a journey to uncover the fundamental and primal nature of humanity. This idea serves as the foundation for my decision to create this movie.
Although the plot revolves around monks, my intention is not to focus on them specifically. Instead, I seek to push them beyond the confines of their time and attire, leading them to encounter a figure who has renounced everything imposed by society—a symbol of absolute freedom and self-discovery.
Through this film, I do not want the audience to be reassured by narration, storyline, or technical details. Rather, I want them to look beyond mere representations and explore the deeper meaning behind each scene. Every moment in this movie reveals something profound about human nature. That is why I chose to explore the concept of absolute loneliness—because when we are alone, we think deeply, reflect, and focus intensely.
Working with these actors and actresses was extraordinary. During rehearsals, they were simply actors, but as the process unfolded, they shed their individual identities and became part of an inquiry into the primitive essence of human existence. To maintain authenticity, I broke away from conventional filmmaking methods. I used no artificial lighting, relying solely on natural light to reinforce realism. I avoided makeup for the actors, ensuring an unfiltered portrayal of their presence. Nothing was pre-planned; we immersed ourselves entirely in nature throughout the filming process.
Art is meant to push us beyond our limits—otherwise, what is its true significance?
